Under the Son Farm Presents
Art By Sarah
Trouble In Paradise
Hurricane Season 2004
The year 2004 was a record breaking hurricane year especially for our part of Florida which is rarely
directly in the path of the big name storms. I asked Sarah to design a piece of art I could put on
T-Shirts to commemorate the events of that year. From my rather primitive sketch Sarah exceeded my
expectations with this wonderful piece of art. She was 14 at the time and hadn't yet had a single art
lesson in her life. We made the T-shirts and sold every last one. I still grin when I look at this picture.
Party Animals Pony Ride Logo
We were long over due for a new logo. I asked Sarah to please draw me a cute pony I could use on
signs, t-shirts, cards and other promotional material. I think it took her from ordering our appetizers
at a restaurant to when they arrived to draw this pony for me. Sarah carries a sketchbook at all times.
Of course it was another several months of me begging to get her to clean it all up, make it perfect
and get a reproducible copy to me, but hey, that just proves she really IS a teenager!
Stirrups and Strides Therapeutic Riding Center Mural
Sarah, now 17, is working towards a Bright Futures Scholarship which will afford her full tuition to
the Florida state school of her choice. She wants very much to go to the University of Florida. One
of the requirements for the scholarship is 75 hours of community service. Paired with the MCCA
requirement, she must fulfill 150 hours of community service. After reading an article about a new
Therapeutic Riding Center called "Stirrups and Strides" Sarah volunteered as a side walker for a 6yr
old Autistic child at the center. When we first began volunteering the center was building an office.
Sarah saw the blank yellow walls and immediately suggested a mural. I warned her they may just
take her up on that, and of course, they did. Here is Sarah just beginning to add background color
to her sketch. She originally planned to have some classmates help but they all had other summer
plans so she has taken this project on alone. I will post more pictures as the mural progresses.

Finally work began on the actual equines. Sarah is still refining them. She promises this
bay will be on a diet soon. She was using a bit of fat to cover other issues.
I know I'm her mother so my opinion doesn't count, but I'm so completely impressed
with this child's ability to do this kind of work. She only had one school year of formal
painting training and never came close to do anything on this scale. She'll do
something like this and then wonder why her mother thinks she can do anything!
The above photos show some progress on the background. My mother, who has
graciously been taking Sarah to paint when time allows, was convinced for
awhile that she would be there on her 90th birthday holding brushes while Sarah
painstakingly painted every blade of grass. What's ironic is my mother is every
bit as obsessive about such things as my daughter.
Brick City Gallery Show
Above are the pieces Sarah had at Brick City 5-1-08.
This year Sarah tried her hand at sculpture (hand..get it..
hahaha). Two of her pieces made it into the art show. She also
had a digital art piece and two animation pieces (can't show
those here they were video).
